Felt Garden Tote

By Katie Berry

Earth Day 2018 is April 22nd and it will be here before we know it. In 2018, Earth Day will be about putting an end to plastic pollution. If you didn’t know, Kunin Felt is made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles! Isn’t that amazing? Kunin Felt is helping to make the world a better place by taking used plastic bottles and creating an amazing product that can be used for many different projects!!!!

In celebration of Earth Day, I made this garden tote made from Kunin Felts Premium felt. Kunin Felts Premium felt is durable and versatile and easy to work with.

Materials used:

  • 12” x 18” craft cut of Kunin Felt Premium Felt: (1) Olive, (1) Violet Sky, (1) Candy Pink, (1) Smoke
  • Sewing Machine, Thread and Pins
  • Cutting Mat, Rotary Cutter and Ruler
  • Die Cut Machine, Cutting Pads and Dies (I used Eileen Hull’s Flower and Leaves and Laura Kelly’s Lemonade Alphabet from Sizzix)
  • Felt Glue

How I made it:

From the 12” x 18” craft cut of Smoke Kunin Felt Premium Felt, I cut out 4” x 4” squares from each corner.

Fold each corner together and pin. Sew each corner together on the outside. I like the way it looks with the stitch on the outside.

Cut (2) 1” x 18” strips. Pin them to the inside of the tote and sew them in place.

You can leave the tote as is with a rounded bottom or you can make it sit flat by adding a stitch along the bottom of each long side. I just grabbed the tote at two of the long corners on the bottom, folded it and stitched it with about a 1/8” stitch.

I am obsessed with flower dies. They are super cute and easy to make. Using my die cut machine, cutting pads, flower die, leaf die and an alphabet die, I cut out all of the pieces that I needed.

I stitched the flowers and leaves in place on the side of the bag. I put one on each side.

Using Beacon Felt Glue, I added the word “GROW” on each side as well.

I love how this turned out.

This little garden tote is perfect for carrying around my small pots and potting tools. You could use it for just your tools, but it could also be used as a potted plant holder. You could leave the handles off and put a couple of potted plants inside! I hope you like this adorable little tote! It can be made in different sizes and colors!!!!

You can now find an expanded color line of Kunin® ClassicfeltKunin® Premiumfelt and Corduroy non-wovens fabrics in cut by the yard at your local Walmart; please inquire as to what is available in your area.

Happy Crafting,
Katie Berry
