As the end of the school year arrives, so does the Girl Scout season. While our troop will continue into the summer with activities, our regular meetings and plans will cease. My co-leader is so super amazing that I decided to make her something that will always remind her of this past year filled with adventure. I whipped up a stitched and quilted tote bag with felt!
You will need nine 3 ½” square quilt blocks of Classicfelt. (two 9” x 12” craft cuts in green). You will also need ribbon, embroidery floss, needles, fusible backing. For the bag, a 10” by 10” piece of felt (12” x 18” craft cut) and 2 pieces of Premiumfelt measuring 12” by 12” (two 12” x 18” craft cuts). I used a sewing machine but you could also hand stitch the entire bag.
I doodled some ideas and then stitched the squares with things that are reminders of the past year’s memories with the Scouts.
Once the stitching was completed, I fused the squares to a 10 inch by 10-inch sheet so that each square around the edge extended past a tiny bit. Be sure to cover your felt with a cloth BEFORE ironing and getting it fused to the backing.
I sewed the 9-block quilt to a 12 inch by 12-inch piece of Eco-fiPlus™ Premiumfelt as it is a little thicker and sturdier. Then I sewed that piece to another 12 inch by 12-inch piece, leaving the top edge open and then added in a ribbon handle.
I know that my co-leader will LOVE this so much. I know that she will especially love the block with the s’mores!
I am going to have the girls write notes to go inside and we will give it to her while we are camping next weekend. Creating appreciation gifts for people who give so much of their heart and soul to scouting matters. Volunteering in Girl Scouts not only takes countless hours but a great deal of love. We love our girls! I can’t wait until she opens this gift!
You can now find an expanded color line of Kunin Eco-fi Classicfelt; Eco-fiPlus™ Premiumfelt and ShaggiChic non-wovens fabrics in cut by the yard at your local Walmart; please inquire as to what is available in your area.
Cheers to Making Things That Matter!
