Dumb Friends League Projects

Puppy Banner for the Shelter with Kunin Group

One of the greatest opportunities in Girl Scouts is the chance to make a difference for others through service. Our troop recently earned their Animal Helpers award and part of this was visiting our local animal shelter, the Dumb Friends League. To show the volunteers there how much we appreciate them, we donated our Hometown Hero cookies to them, almost 6 cases. We also took them lots of supplies for the animals in need of homes, a decorative banner for their greeting station and handmade cards for the volunteers.

To make the darling banner, we used a couple of dies from Ellison/Sizzix to cut shapes out of Kunin Classicfelt. The puppy die is one that I designed for the Pet Shop Collection and it worked perfectly for this project.

For the Banner you will need:

  • 9” x 12” craft cuts Kunin Classicfelt: 6 Peacock, 1 White, 1 Cashmere Tan, 1 Walnut, 1 Smoke, 1 Black
  • Laura Kelly Puppy Die from the Pet Shop Collection Ellison/Sizzix
  • Beacon Felt Glue
  • 3 yards Ribbon
  • Big Shot Die Cutting System
  • Scissors

We cut out a bunch and made them each unique with alternate colors of felt.

Beacon Adhesives makes glue that is just for felt and works great. We used it to adhere the puppies to the banner pieces. Then we used the sewing machine to sew the banner pieces together onto a long piece of ribbon.

To make the cards that we attached to boxes of cookies, we used the same die but used the felt dog bones and glued them to paper hearts. The heart is another die from Ellison/Sizzix.

The girls also used felt to embellish their fleece blankets that they made for the shelter animals. I shared this post and more about it on my blog.

And because they never want to waste a piece of felt, they used the scraps to make finger puppets for themselves. I love that these girls are so creative and thoughtful. I especially love when they do things for themselves too. Self care is an important part of life and one that we often forget to teach kids.

The projects that are completed with Girl Scouts always amaze me and make me so proud. These girls are kind, resourceful, generous and so creative. They inspire me in so many ways! Sharing my crafty career with girls is my favorite part!

You can now find an expanded color line of Kunin Eco-fi Classicfelt; Eco-fiPlus™ Premiumfelt and ShaggiChic non-wovens fabrics in cut by the yard at your local Walmart; please inquire as to what is available in your area.

Laura
