How to Make an Ombre Fringed Felt Heart

by Beth Watson

I simply LOVE scoping out new design trends, whether at a retail store, in a magazine or online. Two of the hottest trends right now are Ombre and Fringe, so I incorporated both of them into my Ombre Fringed Felt Heart, which can be used as a wall hanging or wreath for some quick and easy Valentine’s Day home decor!

Here’s What You Will Need:

  • Kunin Eco-fi® Classicfelt™ 9” x 12” Craft Cuts – Baby Pink, Candy Pink, Shocking Pink, Fuchsia and Red (one of each).
  • Beacon Adhesives Felt Glue
  • Americana Acrylic Paint by DecoArt in Bubblegum Pink
  • Pencil; Permanent Marker; Scissors; Paint Brush 1” flat wash; Ruler; Craft Knife and Self-Healing Mat; Scrap Paper 12” by 12” (I used poster board); Corrugated Cardboard 12” by 12”; Ribbon 24” length

Here’s How To Make It:

Draw a large heart shape onto scrap paper or poster board, making sure to keep the width at 12” maximum. Cut out with scissors and trace onto corrugated cardboard, then cut out again with a craft knife on a self-healing mat, this will prevent the cardboard from getting creased. Base coat both sides and edges of cardboard with Bubblegum Pink, let dry and apply a second coat, if necessary.

TIP: Remember, the easiest way to make sure your heart is even is to fold your paper in half!

Measure and cut two 2” wide by 12” long stripes of Kunin Eco-fi® Classicfelt™ from Baby Pink, Candy Pink, Shocking Pink, Fuchsia and Red. Lightly mark a 1” line in through center length of each strip. Fringe each strip to the 1” mark with scissors.

TIP: When using a maker to measure on to felt, cut inside the lines so you end up with a clean finished product.

Dry fit all felt strips once fringed according to photo. Cut one last strip 1” wide by 12” long from Kunin Eco-fi® Classicfelt™ Baby Pink and fringe with scissors, stopping at ¼” from the edge. This section will be placed at the very top of the heart to finish the fringed effect.

Cut one Red Felt strip in half (into two 6” lengths) and then line up that first 6” strip at the bottom of the fringed edge with the point at the bottom of the heart. Lightly draw a line with pencil, remove felt, apply Beacon Felt Glue and attach felt. Repeat with each strip of felt from darkest to lightest. Place a heavy object, such as a book, on top of the project until dry.

Flip heart over, trim the excess felt with scissors. Cut 24” length of ribbon and attach to back of heart with Beacon Felt Glue, let dry. I prefer my Ombre Fringed Felt Heart clean and simple, but you can always embellish it with pearls, rhinestones or sequins if you like the BLING!
