Giant Felt Mushrooms

By Jennifer Priest

I’m kind of obsessed with mushrooms lately. I think it has to do with spring and my newfound love for fairy gardens. Mushrooms look great with fairy gardens! I didn’t want a traditional fairy garden due to the cats in my house; they’d just chew on it. I decided to make an oversized table top fairy garden as a centerpiece for my dining room table:

Being that Earth Day is this month, this project is special because it contains recycled fibers. The felt itself is made with eco-fi, a recycled material made from 100% plastic bottles. I chose Kunin Eco-Fi Premium Plus felt because it is denser and thicker than the Rainbow ClassicFelt™, helping the mushrooms stand up and hold their shape. In addition, I stuffed the mushrooms with the insides of an old bed pillow. I love using old things rather than throwing them away. An old bed pillow has no value – it can’t be sold at a thrift shop for health reasons and once it is old, flat and dirty, no one wants to sleep on it anymore.  The mushrooms stand on a chipboard base made from recycled paper.

Here’s how to make these oversized mushrooms:

Use the mushrooms for an oversized fairy garden or on their own as fun décor. My husband thinks they’d be fun for a kids’ party featuring a certain Mario and Luigi from a video game. Yeah, that could happen.

Supplies:

  • Kunin Eco-Fi Premium Plus Felt in Red and White
  • Batting or stuffing from an old pillow
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Scissors
  • Sizzix Big Shot
  • Sizzix Bigz Scallop Circle Die
  • Chipboard
  • Glue Gun

What would you “upcycle” with Kunin Eco-Fi Felt Rainbow ClassicFelt™?
